NEW-Stewardship Residency Program
Some people come to CalEarth to learn. Stewards come to care. The CalEarth Stewardship Residency is for people who feel called to give back— to an idea, to a place, and to the work of making it endure. Eight weeks on a living campus. Hands in the earth. Real contribution to something that matters. Stewards help keep CalEarth open to the public by maintaining and repairing the grounds. They welcome visitors, support events, and help CalEarth continue to function as a place of education and exploration. In return, CalEarth offers housing, training in the ongoing work of campus restoration and access to educational materials.

Program Details
The Stewardship Residency is designed for all backgrounds. The right Steward doesn't need to be an earth builder, an architect, or an expert in anything. They need to be someone who shows up, takes care, and finds meaning in work that serves something enduring. If you can take direction, work independently, get along with other like-minded individuals and believe in the future of CalEarth and want to contribute, this program is for you.
The work of stewardship is the essential everyday work of keeping our Institute alive, functioning, and open to the public. During your residency, you'll contribute to:
Ongoing Grounds maintenance, housekeeping, guided tours, support for open houses, workshops, and other events as scheduled.
The hours will depend on the season as we rely on day light and temperature. But typically it will Monday through Friday, 8am to noon. On-site campus events including open houses, site rentals, tours, and workshops vary by season and dates/times will be provided.
The Stewardship Residency requires full commitment for the duration of the program. If you are looking to volunteer in a more casual capacity, CalEarth has a separate volunteer program. The Stewardship Residency requires consistent presence and follow-through.
Each cohort takes on a signature project unique to CalEarth, for example, plaster restoration and repair of the campus structures. SuperAdobe construction requires ongoing care, and re-waterproofing and plastering work is among the most pressing physical needs on the property. Project will be assigned at the start of the session based on most pressing need.
All stewards have the option of a private room in a house on the North side of the property (Happy Living Center) with access to a shared bathroom and kitchen. If you live locally and wish to commute that can be discussed during the interview.
All stewards living on site will be required to pay a refundable $500 deposit to cover possible damages, excessive utility usage, or other lease violations. This deposit will be returned in full upon move-out, provided the property is maintained in good condition and all utilities are used responsibly.
Spending time at CalEarth includes significant amounts of learning--some groups will plaster, waterproof, repair domes, and many other possiblities. However to ensure all Stewards gain a comprehensive SuperAdobe education, you will earn free attendance at any on-campus workshop offered within 12 months of your start date, including all online materials upon successful completion of their term.
There will be up to four stewards per session, lead by CalEarth team members.
